Barcelona Sunday Preview - Top Two Spaniards Square Off In Final

Barcelona, Spain

Rafael Nadal© Manuel QueimadelosRafael Nadal is a sparkling 30-2 in clay court finals.

Spain’s two highest-ranked players on the ATP World Tour, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer - have continued to dominate the start of the European clay season, and will meet in the final of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Sunday. This is their second straight final meeting and fifth overall (Nadal 4-0).

The home country has dominated this tournament, with this being the ninth straight year a Spaniard will capture the title (Carlos Moya in 2003, Tommy Robredo in 2004, Nadal from 2005-09, Fernando Verdasco in 2010). The last non-Spaniard to win here was Argentina’s Gaston Gaudio in 2002. This is also the fifth time in the past seven years it’s an all-Spanish final, all involving Nadal.

World No. 1 Nadal, a five-time champion at this event (winning it five straight years from 2005 to 2009), has lost only 15 games en route to this year’s final, beating one seed along the way, No. 7 seed Gael Monfils (he won handily, 62 62). His semi-final win over Ivan Dodig was his 500th career match win, making him the second-youngest man ever to reach that milestone (after Bjorn Borg).Nadal is 44-15 in ATP World Tour finals, including an all-time best 30-2 record in clay court finals.

World No. 6 Ferrer, seeded No. 4 and a two-time finalist at this event (finishing runner-up to Nadal in 2008 and 2009), has also been stingy this week, losing just 22 games en route to the final, beating back-to-back seeds in the last two rounds (63 63 over No. 6 seed Jurgen Melzer in the quarter-finals and 63 64 over No. 8 seed Nicolas Almagro in the semi-finals). Ferrer was very happy about his win over Almagro, who will break into the Top 10 on Monday: “Nicolas is going through a good moment but I played really well, maybe it was my best match of the week. I’m in good form and playing with a lot of confidence.” Ferrer is 11-11 in ATP World Tour finals, including a 6-8 record in clay court finals.

Nadal leads Ferrer in their head-to-head series, 12-4, which includes a 9-1 record on clay, winning nine times in a row on clay, also winning 19 of their last 20 sets on the surface. Just last week, Nadal prevailed against his countryman, 64 75, in the final of Monte-Carlo. Ferrer said he is up for the challenge: “Rafa is the best clay court player in the history of the game,” he said after his semi-final win. “I will try and do better than last week, play my best tennis and fight until the end.”
