Bryans Edge Isner-Querrey To Reach Final; Llodra-Zimonjic Await

Madrid, Spain

Defending champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan are one win away from claiming their fourth Mutua Madrid Open title after saving match point to defeat fellow Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey 4-6, 6-1, 12-10 in the semi-finals on Saturday.

The top seeds recovered from the loss of the first set to level up and force a deciding Match Tie-break. However, after squandering a match point themselves at 9-8, they stared down defeat as they trailed 9-10. The towering duo of Isner and Querrey were unable to convert, though, and the Bryans capitalised on their second opportunity to claim victory in 70 minutes.

The 33-year-old Bryans triumphed in Madrid in 2006 (d. Knowles-Nestor), 2007 (d. Fyrstenberg-Matkowski) and 2010 (d. Nestor-Zimonjic); they also reached the final in 2004 (l. to Knowles-Nestor). They are bidding to win their fourth title of the season and third on clay, after back-to-back victories in Houston (d. Isner-Querrey) and Monte-Carlo (d. Chela-Soares) last month.

In the final the World No. 1 pairing will face sixth seeds Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic, who battled past Croatians Marin Cilic and Ivan Ljubicic with an identical scoreline after 84 minutes. The 34-year-old Zimonjic is through to the Madrid final for the fourth time; he won the title in 2009 with Daniel Nestor.

After joining forces full time at the start of the 2011 ATP World Tour season, France’s Llodra and Zimonjic of Serbia are through to their second final; they finished runners-up in Rotterdam (l. to Melzer-Petzschner) in February.
