The facility features three main stadiums with a capacity for 12,500, 3,500 and 2,500, respectively. In the case of rain, all three courts have retractile covers that allow play to continue. Prior to 2009, the tournament was held indoors in October from 2002-08.

The nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments bring together the best fields in tennis at the most prestigious venues. This year’s field consists of every Top 20 player in the latest South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings, led by reigning champ (2005) and World No. 1 Rafael Nadal. Other former winners include Roger Federer (2009, ’06), Andy Murray (2008) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (2003).

MAIN DRAW OVERVIEW
• The 10th edition of the Mutua Madrid Open, the fourth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament, returns for the third year at the state-of-the art Caja Magica (Magic Box). This year Madrid and Rome switched weeks on the ATP World Tour calendar. There have been seven different winners in the nine
previous years with eight in Top 10. The only non-Top 10 winner was No. 25 David Nalbandian in 2007.
• This year's 56-player field features an all-star line-up with every member of the Top 20 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings included. Leading the way are World No. 1 and reigning champion (’05) Rafael Nadal along with 2009, ‘06 winner Roger Federer. They are the first two winners since the tournament moved from indoors in October to clay. Other former winners include Andy Murray (2008) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (2003).
• Nadal enters with a 34-match winning streak on clay, the second longest of his career (81 in 2005-07), and the Spaniard has won the last six clay court tournaments he’s entered. He opened the European clay court circuit with back-to-back titles at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo and Barcelona. Nadal will be tested early with four former Top 10 players (of six) in his section. He will take on a qualifier or former World No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis in his opening match and then in the third round could meet former No. 9 Marin-Cilic (vs. Starace) or former No. 4 Juan Martin del Potro or former No. 8 Mikhail Youzhny. Del Potro was in the Estoril final on Sunday and he’s only played Nadal once on clay, back in 2007 in the first round at Roland Garros (Nadal 75 63 62). In the quarters, seeded foes include No. 8 Jurgen Melzer and No. 12 Andy Roddick, who is playing his first tournament on clay this year.
• In the second quarter of the draw, No. 3 Federer and No. 5 Robin Soderling are the highest seeds. Both players have accounted for Nadal’s last two clay court losses – Soderling at ’09 Roland Garros and Federer at ’09 Madrid. Federer opens against the winner of Milos Raonic-Feliciano Lopez and in the third round could meet No. 15 and Madrid native Fernando Verdasco. In the quarter-finals, Soderling and No. 10 Nicolas Almagro are possible seeded opponents. Almagro, the newest member of the Top 10, has a difficult opening round match against No. 18th-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
• In the bottom half of the draw (third quarter), No. 4 Murray, No. 7 Tomas Berdych, No. 9 Gael Monfils and No. 16 Viktor Troicki are the seeds. Murray has a tough opening round match against the winner of former Top 10s Ivan Ljubicic and Gilles Simon. In the third round, Troicki is the possible seeded opponent. Berdych plays the winner of Marcel Granollers-Nikolay Davydenko and in the third round, he could take on Monfils, who faces big-serving Ivo Karlovic.
• In the final quarter, No. 2 Novak Djokovic, who was trying to earn his fifth title of the season in his hometown of Belgrade on Sunday and remain undefeated this year, opens against the winner of Kevin Anderson-Ernests Gulbis. Djokovic was a semi-finalist in Madrid in 2009. In the 3rd Rd., Djokovic could play No. 14 Stanislas Wawrinka or former No. 1 Ferrero. Djokovic’s possible quarter-final opponent is No. 6 David Ferrer, a semi-finalist last year and runner-up last month in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona.  The other possible seeded opponent is No. 11 Mardy Fish, who faces John Isner in the first round.

DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
• The top eight seeded teams receive a bye into the second round. An outstanding field is led by World No. 1 and reigning champions Bob and Mike Bryan. They also captured the title in 2006-07.
• The Bryans have won three titles this year (Australian Open, Houston and Monte-Carlo) and they are coming off a runner-up effort in Barcelona. They have a career mark of 70-40 in finals and last season they finished as the No. 1 team on the ATP World Tour for the sixth time in the past eight seasons.
• The other seeds are: 2) Mirnyi-Nestor, 3) Melzer-Petzschner, 4) Bopanna-Qureshi, 5) Kubot-Marach, 6) Llodra-Zimonjic, 7)  Fyrstenberg-Matkowski and 8) Moodie-Norman.
• There have been three different teams to win the first three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments this year – Dolgopolov-Malisse (Indian Wells), Bhupathi-Paes (Miami) and Bryan-Bryan (Monte-Carlo).
