Isner and Querrey Reach Doubles Quarter-finals

Madrid, Spain

Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey upset No. 5 seeds Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach at the Mutua Madrid Open Thursday, knocking out the Polish-Austrian duo 6-3, 1-6, 10-7 to advance to the quarter-finals. The big-serving combination improves to 5-2 on clay this season and will play 4th seeded Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi for a chance to reach the semi-finals.

Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, seeded second, moved into the quarter-finals with a routine 6-2, 6-3 victory over Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Mirnyi and Nestor applied constant pressure on their opponents’ serves, winning 56 per cent of their return points and converting five breaks of serve in the process. The win puts Nestor at 799 doubles wins, and he can clinch the magic number Friday, but will have to get past his previous partner Nenad Zimonjic (and Michael Llodra) to achieve the milestone in Madrid.

No. 8 seeds Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman won their second round match in straight sets, defeating the alternate pairing of Javier Marti and Daniel Munoz-De La Nava 6-3, 7-6(11). The 2009 Roland Garros finalists saved six of eight break points faced and capitalized on three of their four opportunities to break.

It’s the first win of the year for Moodie; the South African made his return in Munich last week after taking time off to be with his wife, who gave birth to the couple’s second child. Norman recently became a father again too, as he and his wife welcomed their third child three weeks ago.

In the quarter-finals, Moodie and Norman will battle the big serving duo of Marin Cilic and Ivan Ljubicic, who hit eight aces en route to their 6-3, 6-3 victory against Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 6-3, 6-3 to advance. The Croatians are partnering for the second time this season.
