Fish-Roddick Oust Defending Champions Bryans

Rome, Italy

In an all-American quarter-final contest on Friday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick upended top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 4-6, 7-6(1), 10-4 in one hour and 32 minutes.

The Bryan brothers were bidding to win the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court title at the Foro Italico for the third time this week, after victories in 2008 and 2010. The No. 1 duo were also chasing their fifth tour-level title of the season.

Fish and Roddick have won two ATP World Tour titles in their sporadic appearances together, most recently triumphing at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells two years ago. For a place in the final, they will face Finnish-Argentine pairing Jarkko Nieminen and Carlos Berlocq, who upset seventh seeds Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic 6-4, 6-3 in 72 minutes.

Another American duo advanced to the semi-finals as John Isner and Sam Querrey continued their good run of form with a hard-fought 1-6, 6-4, 12-10 victory over sixth seeds Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach. The towering pairing reached the final on clay in Houston last month and last week were semi-finalists in Madrid, losing to the Bryans on both occasions. In the second round in Rome, they had ousted third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

The last semi-final berth was decided when Italian wild cards Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini cruised past 2010 Wimbledon runners-up Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau 6-2, 6-1 in 64 minutes.

It is the second time this season that an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament has featured four unseeded teams in the semi-finals. It also happened in Indian Wells, where Alexandr Dolgopolov and Xavier Malisse won the title. Prior to Indian Wells, it had not happened since the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in 1994, when all eight seeded teams fell before the quarter-final stage.
