Italian Andreas Seppi has given one of Sicily’s neglected coastlines a boost after winning a beach tennis showdown with Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome Wednesday. As part of Corona’s Save The Beach campaign, in association with ATP ACES For Charity, the two players battled on behalf of their adopted beaches.
Seppi, playing for Litorali di Augusta in Sicily, defeated Garcia-Lopez, playing for the beach of Puerto de Sagunto, Valencia, 17-15. Corona, premier partner of the ATP, will now allocate funds to rejuvenate Litorali di Augusta.
Prior to the showdown, fans were asked to cast a vote for one of 10 neglected European coastlines. Litorali di Augusta topped the voting with 50,000 votes, followed by Puerto de Sagunto, which attracted 15,000 votes. Seppi and Garcia-Lopez then played beach tennis to decide which of the two beaches would benefit from the Corona Save The Beach campaign. The clean-up will take place in June.
Seppi said: "Because I love the beach, especially those of Sardinia, I am delighted to have been involved in an event like this and have helped an Italian beach."
Garcia-Lopez said: "There are no losers because it is a good cause and I also enjoyed the beach tennis, something new for me, although I was not able to give victory to the Spanish beach."
