Bryans Win: No. 2 and 3 Seeds Lose

After two days of waiting due to bad weather, top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan finally played their first-round match at The Championships on Saturday, dismissing Maximo Gonzalez and Potito Starace 6-3, 6-3.

The Americans improved to a 43-11 record on their 13th appearance at the All England Club; they won the title in 2006 (d. Santoro-Zimonjic) and have been runners-up on three occasions in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

The 33-year-old twins came into Wimbledon on the back of winning their 72nd team title at The Queen’s Club (d. Bhupathi-Paes), and are the last of the top seeded teams remaining after the No. 2 and No. 3 seeded pairings went down Saturday.

Roland Garros champions and No. 2 seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor were ousted by Kevin Anderson and Julian Knowle, 7-6(2), 7-6(7), 6-3, while third-seeded Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes succumbed to Arnaud Clement and Lukas Dlouhy in four sets. Clement and Dlouhy defeated the Indian Express 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(1), 6-4.

Last year’s finalists Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau, seeded eighth, prevailed in four sets against Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut, taking their second-round encounter 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4).
