World No. 87 Filippo Volandri secured his place in the second round of the SkiStar Swedish Open on Monday in Bastad at the expense of fifth-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo.

The Italian was leading 7-5, 5-5 when two-time former champion Robredo was forced to retire with a left thigh injury after one hour and 49 minutes of play.

The 29-year-old Volandri recorded his ninth tour-level win in a season highlighted by reaching the semi-finals in Belgrade (l. to Lopez). He has enjoyed greater success on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2011, reaching finals in Barletta and Napoli.

The right-hander is making his fifth appearance at this ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tennis tournament, going as far as the semi-finals (l. to Ferrer) in 2007. He goes on to face either Mikhail Kukushkin or Andreas Haider-Maurer.
