Melzer-Petzschner Triumph In Stuttgart Final

ATP World Tour 2011 Season: Week 28

Melzer, Petzschner© MercedesCup/P.ZimmerMelzer and Petzschner claimed their fourth title together and first on clay in Stuttgart.

No. 2 seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner defeated third-seeded Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the MercedesCup in Stuttgart to notch their second title of the year on Saturday.

Both teams struggled to hold serve early in the match, as the first four games saw three breaks of serve. After moving ahead 2-1, Melzer and Petzschner maintained their advantage. Serving at 5-4, they saved two break points to close out the first set in 30 minutes.

In the second set, the Austrian-German duo broke serve in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead and did not relinquish it, claiming victory on their first match point. "We were returning pretty good and were aggressive. After losing serve in the first game of the match, we came back strong," Melzer told ATPWorldTour.com.

Melzer and Petzschner won every set they played this week to improve to a 4-0 finals record together. The title adds to their earlier season triumph at the ATP World Tour 500 event in Rotterdam. "It’s a great feeling, especially winning in front of the home crowd. I think we played a really good match today," said Petzschner. "They didn’t make it easy for us, but we came through and it was a nice win. It’s a great experience winning a title on clay and we have a lot of confidence for Hamburg."

Added Melzer, ""It’s nice to get the title and get back on track to London. Hopefully we can continue like this in Hamburg."

The Spaniards were bidding for their first team title, having reached the final in Zagreb (l. to Norman-Tecau). Granollers dropped to a 6-7 finals record while Lopez fell to a 5-5 mark.
