HAMBURG TUESDAY PREVIEW –  GERMANS LOOK TO MAINTAIN CENTRE COURT SUCCESS
After a 3-0 opening day start, four more Germans take to Centre Court on Tuesday at bet-at-home Open German Tennis Championships 2011 in first and second round action.

In the opening match, qualifier Marsel Ilhan of Turkey meets No. 3 German Philipp Petzschner. Ilhan is 3-7 on the season and he’s making his Hamburg debut. Petzschner, who is ranked No. 78, enters with a 19-14 record this year (6-3 on clay). He’s played well on home soil, reaching the final in Halle last month (l. to Kohlschreiber), the semi-finals in Munich in May (l. to Mayer) and winning the doubles title last week in Stuttgart (w/Melzer).

In the second match, German wild card Tobias Kamke and No. 7 seed Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina square off for the first time in a second round battle. Kamke had the easiest opening day match, a 61 61 victory over Spaniard Pere Riba. Kamke reached his first career ATP World Tour semi-final in Newport 10 days ago (l. to Isner). Chela is making his 10th showing (8-9) in Hamburg and his best result was the quarter-finals in 2005.

In the third match, another wild card, Julian Reister, attempts to win his second round meeting against No. 14 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain. In their previous encounter in the first round of Basel in 2006, Garcia-Lopez prevailed in straight sets. Last year Reister reached the third round here, losing in a final set tie-break to Denis Istomin. Garcia-Lopez is making his fourth appearance in Hamburg (3-3 mark) and his best result of the season was a semi-final in Zagreb (l. to Dodig) in February.

In the final match, defending champ Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan looks to post his first ATP World Tour match win on clay this season as he faces No. 2 German Philipp Kohlschreiber for the second time. In April, Kohlschreiber won a tight three-setter at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo. Last year Golubev came in ranked No. 82 and he broke through to capture his first ATP World Tour title (d. Melzer). But he’s struggled this season with a 4-20 mark, including 0-12 on clay. Golubev is trying to break a 16-match losing streak since his last win over Florian Mayer in 1st Rd. of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells in March.

On outside courts, there are nine matches, four including seeds – No. 4 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, No. 5 Gilles Simon of France, No. 10 Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine and No. 15 Fabio Fognini of Italy. In addition, 20-year-old German wild card Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, the youngest player in the draw, meets former No. 1 and Stuttgart champion Juan Carlos Ferrero.

In the first match on Stadium, former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt takes on American qualifier Phillip Simmonds, who is playing in his first ATP World Tour level match since the ’06 US Open. It is the 25-year-old’s third career tour level match (’05 Washington). Hewitt, who underwent foot surgery earlier this season, comes in ranked No. 174, his lowest since Mar. 9, 1998 when he played his first full year on the ATP World Tour. He is 8-7 on the season with three quarter-final finishes in back-to-back weeks in San Jose and Memphis in February and Halle last month.

In the next match, wild cards Tommy Haas and Robby Ginepri meet for the sixth time. Haas leads 4-1 and their last meeting came in the third round at the ’06 US Open with Haas prevailing in a fifth set tie-break. The previous year in Flushing Meadows, Ginepri edged out the German 6-3 in the fifth set en route to the semi-finals (l. to Agassi). Haas, who ranked a career-high No. 2 in May 2002, is 1-4 on the season and in his last tournament in Newport, he retired in the second round (vs. Yani) due to lower back pain. Haas, who underwent hip and elbow surgery in March 2010, was sidelined for 14 months before returning at Roland Garros in late May. He comes in ranked No. 585. Ginepri is playing in his first ATP World Tour tournament since breaking his  elbow in a biking accident at Kennesaw Mountain in September last year. Ginepri, of nearby Marietta, ranked a career-high No. 15 in December 2005. He’s played in two Challengers in the past month, in Winnetka, Illinois where he reached the quarter-finals (l. to Young)  and last week in Aptos, Calif. where he lost in the first round.

On Court 1, 19-year-old American Ryan Harrison, the youngest player in the draw, takes on Japanese qualifier Yuichi Sugita, No. 5 seed and 20-year-old Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov makes his Atlanta debut against qualifier Rajeev Ram, and on Court 2, 21-year-old Lithuanian Richard Berankis returns for the first time since March due to a hip/thigh injury. All three have reached career-high rankings this season, Harrison at No. 101 on July 4, Dimitrov at No. 59 on July 11 and Berankis at No. 73 on Jan. 31 after reaching the 3rd Rd. at the Aust. Open.
