Defending Champ Fish Wins Opener; Harrison Upsets Malisse

Defending champion Mardy Fish began his quest for a second straight title at the Atlanta Tennis Championships with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Nicolas Mahut on Thursday evening.

The World No. 9 saved four of the five break points he faced to improve to a 3-0 record against the Frenchman.

In the quarter-finals, Fish will square off against No. 8 seed Somdev Devvarman, who cruised in his second-round match, defeating Tatsuma Ito 6-1, 6-3 in 61 minutes.

Devvarman won all 21 of his first service points and broke Ito four times to advance to his third quarter-final of the year.

American Ryan Harrison progressed to his first ATP World Tour quarter-final this season, upsetting fourth-seeded Xavier Malisse 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4 in a rain delayed second-round encounter.

The 19-year-old broke the Belgian at 4-4 in the final set and then served out the match to clinch the victory in two hours and 19 minutes of play.

The Bradenton, Fla. resident is bidding to reach his first ATP World Tour semi-final and will face qualifier Rajeev Ram on Friday.

Ram beat Australian Lleyton Hewitt 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 to advance to his first quarter-final since appearing in the final eight of Johannesburg in 2010.
