Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini captured their first ATP World Tour team title in Umag on Saturday, defeating home favourites Marin Cilic and Lovro Zovko 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 in the final of the ATP Studena Croatia Open.
Bolelli and Fognini, joining forces for just the second time, were pushed to a third set after squandering three match points up 5-4, 40-15 in the second set on Cilic’s serve. After fending off the Italians, Cilic and Zovko won the next two games to send the championship into a match tie-break.
Both teams held their nerve in the deciding set, but Bolelli and Fognini made their move at 7-7, winning the final three points to claim the title in one hour and 38 minutes. "In the final set, we played unbelievable, especially at 8-7 when Simone hit a backhand passing shot, which was incredible. At the end, I closed a volley and we won our first tournament together," Fognini told ATPWorldTour.com
It’s Bolelli’s second title after triumphing at the BMW Open in Munich with Horacio Zeballos in April. Fognini notched his first victory in his third doubles final. "I think me and Fabio played a very good tournament all week long," said Bolelli.
"Every match was tough... the last three went to a match tie-break, so we are happy. This is my second title this year and in my career. The doubles this year has given me a lot of confidence, even for the singles."
Zovko dropped to an 0-5 finals record with the loss, including his third defeat in Umag after reaching back-to-back finals in 2000 and 2001 with Ivan Ljubicic. Cilic was appearing in his first doubles final.
