Two-time former finalist Igor Andreev opened his campaign at the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad on Monday with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Germany’s Mischa Zverev. The Russian did not face a break point on serve and broke his opponent on three occasions to prevail in 69 minutes.

World No. 78 Andreev finished runner-up at the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tennis tournament on his debut in 2004 (l. to Federer) and again in 2008 (l. to Hansecu); he has also reached the semi-finals twice.

World No. 80 Denis Istomin advanced to the second round as he defeated Austrian qualifier Martin Fischer 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The Uzbekistani saved 12 of 16 break points and broke serve five times to claim the hard-fought victory in just over two hours.

The 24-year-old Istomin, a quarter-finalist at the SAP Open in San Jose (l. to Verdasco) in February, improved to a 9-17 match record on the season. He goes on to face third-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny, who received a first-round bye.

Fischer’s fellow Austrian, Andreas Haider-Maurer, fared better, dismissing Swiss qualifier Yann Marti 6-1, 6-4 in 63 minutes. The 24 year old, this week a career-high No. 70 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings, broke serve three times from seven opportunities and won 83 per cent of points on first serve to notch his sixth win of the season.
