The Latvian won 50 per cent of his return points, breaking the No. 2 seed four times to claim his first victory in three meetings against the Argentine.

Gulbis advances to his second semi-final of the season and will play first time ATP World Tour semi-finalist Alex Bogomolov Jr for a place in the final. Bogomolov Jr. ended a five-match winless run in ATP World Tour quarter-finals after rallying from a set down to beat fourth-seeded Thomaz Bellucci 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and two minutes.

World No. 9 Mardy Fish dismissed No. 8 seed Igor Kunitsyn 6-2, 6-4 in their quarter-final encounter.

After five breaks of serve to start the match, the top-seeded Fish took command, holding the rest of the way through to notch his first win in three clashes against the Russian.

The win puts Fish into the semi-finals in Los Angeles for the second time, after the American reached the final four in 2008. He’s looking to win his second title in as many weeks after defending his trophy at the Atlanta Tennis Championships last week (d. Isner).

On Saturday, Fish will face Ryan Harrison in the semi-finals for the second tournament in a row.

Harrison defeated Yen-Hsun Lu 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to progress to his second consecutive ATP World Tour semi-final.
