Borg-McEnroe Rivalry Hits Underwear Drawer
by ATP Staff|
Fans love to debate whether the Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer rivalry is more compelling than the John McEnroe-Bjorn Borg rivalry of the early 1980s. But McEnroe and Borg have taken their rivalry to a place where the Nadal-Federer rivalry has yet to go... the underwear drawer.
The legendary rivals will compete for most sales of their limited edition underwear line, “Bjorn Loves John”, featuring two designs by each player and inspired by their classic Wimbledon matches.
While Borg has been an established name in men’s knickers since 1997, this will be McEnroe’s first foray into this field. “I’ve been wearing his underwear for 10 years,” said the American. “Now I finally have a chance to see if my name has any cache below the waist.”
McEnroe believed he could be at a bit of a disadvantage, but promised to put up a good fight against the Swede, with whom he split their 14 on-court meetings.
“Since it’s his company and his brand, I feel like my back’s against the wall but I was told that I would have an equal opportunity to sell as many as him,” he said. “This is a two-on-two battle as far as I’m concerned.”
The “Bjorn Loves Borg” collection will go on sale starting August and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the John and Patty McEnroe Foundation. Some fans will also be in for a lucky surprise: 100 pieces of the boxer briefs, to be randomly distributed worldwide, have been autographed by Borg and McEnroe.
