Seventh-seeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers opened his bid to win ATP World Tour titles in consecutive weeks with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Italian Filippo Volandri on Tuesday at the Bet-At-Home Cup Kitzbühel.

Granollers won 89 per cent of his first serve points and converted on four of his five break points to avenge his loss to Volandri earlier this year in the Belgrade quarter-finals. He improved to an 18-18 season record.

The 25-year-old Granollers, who is making his debut at this ATP World Tour 250 tournament,  knocked out three seeds – Stanislas Wawrinka, Mikhail Youzhny and Fernando Verdasco – en route to the Gstaad title last week. On Monday, he moved up 12 spots to a career-high No. 33 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings.

Granollers next plays Croatian qualifier Antonio Veic, who came back to defeat Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and 23 minutes. The 196th-ranked Veic reached the third round of Roland Garros as a qualifier this past May, defeating Nikolay Davydenko before falling to Rafael Nadal.

Colombian Santiago Giraldo made quick work of Daniel Brands in his opening match, taking 68 minutes to dismiss the German qualifier 6-3, 6-3. World No. 62 Giraldo has a 14-12 record on clay this season, highlighted by a runner-up finish in Santiago (l. to Robredo).

In a first-round meeting between two qualifiers, Brazil’s Joao Souza edged Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3) after two hours and 21 minutes.
