Montreal Saturday Preview

Just four men are left standing at the Rogers Cup and only two of them will make it through to the final, as the semi-finals take place on Saturday at the sixth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament of the season.

First up is No. 6 seed Mardy Fish against Janko Tipsarevic. Before this year both players had 0-2 records here, falling first round in both of their previous appearances - now in their third attempts at this event they have put together by far their best performances. Particularly impressive is Tipsarevic, who is unseeded and has defeated two seeds to reach his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final (No. 15 seed Fernando Verdasco and No. 7 seed Tomas Berdych). He will debut in the Top 20 on the next rankings. Fish could be tough for him though - Fish is 3-1 in their head-to-head, winning their last three meetings. “Mardy is an intelligent player," Tipsarevic said. “He's an example of an all-around player that can defend, stay back, be passive, but then on the other hand go to the net, play serve and volley and completely mix up the game.”

In the evening, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic takes on No. 13 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. After tough opening sets over Nikolay Davydenko and Marin Cilic in his first two rounds, Djokovic looked sharp during his quarter-final win over No. 5 seed Gael Monfils on Friday night, winning nine straight games from 2-all in the first set before closing out the Frenchman, 62 61. "I have played the best match of the tournament, no doubt,” Djokovic said. "I had a difficult game at two-all to hold my serve. After that, when I made the first break, it was incredible. Nine games in a row. I'm happy to see my game is progressing each day." Tsonga has already beaten two Top 8 seeds to get here - No. 3 seed Roger Federer and No. 8 seed Nicolas Almagro - and will now break back into the Top 10 by virtue of this week’s performance. He leads Djokovic in their head-to-head series, 5-3, but in their only 2011 meeting it was Djokovic who won, in the semi-finals of Wimbledon. “The last match was very close, very intense, very important for both of us,” Djokovic said.

Djokovic is an amazing 51-1 on the season, including a perfect 25-0 in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events this season (winning 19 of those matches in straight sets, being pushed to three sets six times). He is trying to become the first player to win five ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles in a season (since 1990).
