Former World No. 5 Fernando Verdasco moved to within one match of a showdown with second seed and countryman Rafael Nadal  after an opening-round win at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati Monday. Verdasco saved six of seven break points to defeat Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 7-6(4), avenging a loss earlier in the year to the Brazilian in Acapulco.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet, the No. 12 seed, saved the lone break point he faced in a 6-1, 7-6(4) win over Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov. Gasquet is seeded to meet Montreal finalist Mardy Fish in the third round.

"I won 1 and 6 against a guy who's [22] in the world," said Gasquet. "Every match is very a tough to win here in Cincinnati, a lot great players, so for sure I'm very happy to win. I [played] a pretty good tie-break, a lot of tension, but I knew it was important to win it, because in the third set you never know what could happen. So I'm happy."

Former World No. 3 David Nalbandian snapped a three-match losing streak as he defeated Japanese qualifier Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 36 minutes. The Argentine next plays World No. 4 Andy Murray, who last week lost his opening match to South African Kevin Anderson as the two-time defending champion at the Rogers Cup.

Argentine Juan Monaco will face Czech Tomas Berdych in the second round after closing out a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 win over German Tommy Haas in two hours and 11 minutes.

In an all-Spanish battle, Feliciano Lopez served 19 aces in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Italian Fabio Fognini claimed four service breaks in a 6-4, 6-1 upset of 14th-seeded Serbian Viktor Troicki.

Qualifier Alex Bogomolov Jr. cut short the comeback of fellow American Robby Ginepri, beating the American wild card 6-4, 6-3.
