Third Seeds Fall; Kas-Peya Reach Semis

ATP World Tour 2011 Season: Week 34

Israeli pairing Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram ousted third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday in the first round of the Winston-Salem Open.

Erlich and Ram improved to a 15-15 team record on the season after breaking serve five times from 11 opportunities. The Israelis won their 13th team title at Eastbourne (d. Dimitrov-Seppi) in June and were semi-finalists last month in Los Angeles (l. to Devvarman-Huey).

In quarter-final action, fourth seeds Christopher Kas and Alexander Peya made smooth progress, dismissing American wild cards Michael Russell and Donald Young 6-2, 6-1 in 53 minutes. The German-Austrian tandem have been in strong form in recent months, reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon and Stuttgart before finishing runners-up at Gstaad.

In the semi-finals they will face Santiago Gonzalez and Jamie Murray after the Mexican-British team battled past Lukas Dlouhy and Horia Tecau 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 in 90 minutes.

British-American pairing Colin Fleming and Scott Lipsky rounded out the day’s action by securing a semi-final spot with a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory over Treat Conrad Huey and Cory Parr.
