A trio of Americans - James Blake, Donald Young and Ryan Sweeting - enjoyed straight-sets wins on opening Sunday at the inaugural Winston-Salem Open, an ATP World Tour 250 tournament held on the campus of Wake Forest University.

Former World No. 4 Blake, who reached the third round last week in Cincinnati (l. to Federer), converted five of his 10 break points to defeat Kazakhstani Mikhail Kukushkin 7-5, 6-1. Adding to six previous Davis Cup victories in the city, he improved his unbeaten record in Winston-Salem to 7-0.

Young needed just 68 minutes to close out a 6-3, 6-4 win over German Michael Berrer, while Sweeting accounted for Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-3, 7-5 after going four for 10 on his break chances.

Russian Igor Andreev saved all nine break points faced on serve to prevail over 18-year-old Australian Bernard Tomic 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 after two hours and five minutes. Tomic had won their first meeting earlier this year at Wimbledon, where he went on to reach the quarter-finals as a qualifier.

German Tobias Kamke, the 2010 ATP World Tour Newcomer of the Year, completed a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Colombian Alejandro Falla.

The top four seeds in the qualifying draw all advanced, led by Japan’s Kei Nishikori and American Michael Russell.
