THURSDAY PREVIEW – SEVEN OF TOP 10 SEEDS IN QUARTER-FINALS, LED BY RODDICK
Two of America’s brightest stars are one win away from a semi-final clash at the Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University, but they both have Top 8 seeds to contend with as all four quarter-finals take place at the inaugural ATP World Tour 250 tournament on Thursday.
First up on Center Court is No. 4 seed and local favourite John Isner against No. 8 seed Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus. Isner, a former Top 20 player, came out of Wimbledon ranked No. 46, but with three strong weeks this summer - winning Newport, reaching the final of Atlanta and the semi-finals of Washington DC - he returned to the Top 30. He had early losses at the ATP Masters 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati, but this week he has regained his winning form, prevailing in straight sets in his first two rounds (never losing his serve and firing 27 aces along the way). Now he has a tough task in a former Top 10 player, Baghdatis, who is looking for his first win in three meetings.
Next up is top seed/wild card Andy Roddick against No. 7 seed Juan Monaco of Argentina in a first-time meeting. Roddick is out of the Top 20 for the first time in 10 years at No. 21 and he has stormed through his first two matches here without even facing a single break point . He has scored routine straight set wins over lucky loser Edouard Roger-Vasselin and No. 15 seed Santiago Giraldo. Next up is a tougher customer in Monaco though, a former Top 15 player who has also won his first two rounds in straight sets. Roddick is appearing in his fourth quarter-final or better this season and Monaco his third, the first on hard courts.
Next up is No. 9 seed Sergiy Stakhovsky against qualifier Julien Benneteau. Both players have pulled off upsets this week - Benneteau beat No. 16 seed Igor Kunitsyn, Stakhovsky defeated No. 5 seed Nikolay Davydenko - and now they will battle it out for a spot in the semi-finals - for both of them it would be their first ATP World Tour semi-final of the year. Stakhovsky won their only previous ATP meeting in straight sets.
At night, No. 3 seed and top Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov faces No. 10 seed Robin Haase. Both players have won their first ATP World Tour title in the past month. Dolgopolov squeaked through his third round match against No. 14 seed Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday, saving a match point en route to a 64 16 76(7) victory. Dolgopolov has won his last four quarter-final matches on the ATP World Tour, his last loss at this stage coming at the Australian Open in January (to Murray). Can he keep the streak going? Dolgopolov beat Haase in their only previous meeting on the grass of Halle in June, but it was very close - he rallied from a set down to beat the Dutchman in three, 67(4) 64 64.
