Former World No. 1 Andy Roddick recorded his first victory since Wimbledon on Tuesday evening at the Winston-Salem Open. The top-seeded American dismissed French lucky loser Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 6-4 to reach the third round of the inaugural edition of the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament.

Since reaching the third round at Wimbledon (l. to Lopez), Roddick represented the United States in Davis Cup action, falling to David Ferrer, and was subsequently sidelined with an abdominal strain before returning with a first-round exit last week in Cincinnati (l. to Kohlschreiber).

The 28-year-old Roddick, winner of the 2003 US Open title, recorded his 22nd win of the season in 72 minutes as he fired 11 aces and broke serve three times against the No. 107-ranked Roger-Vasselin. He goes on to face No. 15 seed Santiago Giraldo, who beat Blaz Kavcic 6-2, 6-3 in 62 minutes.

Third seed Alexandr Dolgopolov also made a strong start, defeating Argentina Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 6-4 in 84 minutes. The Ukrainian broke serve three times and won 73 per cent of points behind his first serve to improve to a 28-20 match record on the season.

The World No. 22 is playing just his third tournament of the Olympus US Open Series, having opened with a second-round exit in Montreal (l. to Berdych) and a first-round defeat in Cincinnati (l. to Gasquet). Before transferring to hard courts, the 22 year old had won his first ATP World Tour title in Umag (d. Cilic).
