Indo-Pak Express Work Hard For Win

New York, U.S.A.

Fifth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi survived a second set blip to secure their place in the US Open second round, defeating Americans Robby Ginepri and Rhyne Williams 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 on Tuesday at Flushing Meadows.

Fourth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes also advanced, overcoming Alexandr Dolgopolov and Albert Ramos 7-6(8) 6-4. The Indian duo, who reached the US Open final in 1999 (l. to Lareau-O’Brien), came into New York on the back of victory in Cincinnati (d. Llodra-Zimonjic) and improved to a 25-8 match record on the season.

Sixth-seeded Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski overcame a slow start to defeat Americans Michael Shabaz and Ryan Sweeting 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in 82 minutes. The Poles’ best performance at Flushing Meadows was a quarter-final showing last year.

Seventh seeds and Wimbledon finalists Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau broke serve three times from 10 opportunities as they dismissed Americans Bradley Klahn and David Martin 6-4, 6-4. Elsewhere, No. 15 seeds Mark Knowles and Xavier Malisse worked hard for their first-round win, beating Americans Jack Sock and Jackson Withrow 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1.
