Ivo Karlovic and Frank Moser, who are competing together at just their second tournament, beat top seeds and three-time US Open champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 on Wednesday in one hour and 38 minutes.

It is the first time the Bryan twins have lost in the first round of a Grand Slam championship since January 2001 at the Australian Open, when they fell to Australians Paul Baccanello and Luke Smith 6-4, 7-6(4).

Karlovic and Moser fired down 10 aces and 44 winners  in just their third tour-level victory. The pair first teamed up at the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in July, when they reached the semi-finals (l. to Ebden-Harrison).

Ninth seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner avoided successive first-round losses at the US Open when they beat Santiago Gonzalez and Jamie Murray 6-3, 6-0 in 52 minutes. The pair dropped three points on first serve and converted four of seven break point opportunities.

Italians Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace saved all four break points they faced to overcome No. 11 seeds Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek 6-4, 6-4 in 79 minutes.

Germans Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Waske, playing together at tour-level for the first time since May 2009 at Roland Garros, saved match points to scrape past American No. 16 seeds Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 5-7, 7-6(6), 7-6(5). Lipsky and Ram hit nine aces, nine winners and converted three of six break point opportunities but it was not enough.

Israelis Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, who won their second ATP World Tour doubles title of the season at the Winston-Salem Open at Forest Wake University, defeated Argentineans Lucas Arnold Ker and Juan Monaco 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3, hitting seven aces and seven winners.
