Cermak-Polasek Through To Kuala Lumpur Final

Third seeds Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek progressed to their fourth final of the season at the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2011, upsetting top seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner 7-6(7), 6-4 on Saturday.

After edging the US Open champions in a first set tie-break, Cermak and Polasek stepped up their game, winning 80 per cent of their service points while converting the lone break of serve in the second set to claim victory in one hour and 23 minutes.

Coming off a semi-final showing in Bucharest, the Czech-Slovak pair are bidding to win their third title in 2011, having triumphed in Belgrade (d. Marach-Peya) and Gstaad (d. Kas-Peya).

In the final, they’ll face second seeds Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer. The Australian Open semi-finalists topped No. 4 seeds Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-6 to advance.

The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals hopefuls, currently in ninth place in the Battle for London, were meeting Lipsky and Ram for the fourth time this season, evening their record to 2-2 with the victory. Prior to this week in Kuala Lumpur, Butorac and Rojer had not won back-to-back matches since claiming their second title of the year in Nice (d. Gonzalez-Marrero).

At the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok, Michael Kohlmann and Alexander Waske knocked out fourth-seeded Paul Hanley and Dick Norman 6-4, 7-6(4) in a semi-final encounter.

Both teams had several opportunities to break serve, but combined to break just five times in 22 chances. Kohlmann and Waske took an early lead in the second set tie-break and closed out the match in one hour and 32 minutes to reach their fourth final. The German duo last contested an ATP World Tour final in 2007, taking home the trophy in Zagreb.

Kohlmann and Waske will play Oliver Marach and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi in Sunday’s final. The top seeds advanced Friday with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 3 seeds Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli.
