Mardy's Socks Meet His Need For Speed

Mardy Fish is known for having a reliable serve, solid groundstrokes and a firm volley. But the American also has the distinction of wearing unusual low-cut socks. On Wednesday at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo, the World No. 8 explained his sock preference in a press conference. “I usually play a lot of golf at home. When you wear shorts and wear long socks, it doesn’t look good, so I wear short socks when I play golf,” said Fish.

“So then that translated into practising tennis with them, just practise, and I’d wear the regular ones during the match.”

So how did the short socks find their way into Fish’s matches? According to the 29 year old, it’s attributed to a change in speed around the court... and a fashion faux pas. “I felt slower with longer socks for some reason, so I can’t go back to playing with longer socks, because I feel much quicker,” assessed Fish. “And I think they look funny too.”

Fish, enjoying his best season to date, is in the hunt to qualify for his first Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, holding the sixth spot in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Year-To-Date Rankings. A title in Tokyo this week will help the London hopeful pad his position heading into the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

The top eight singles players and doubles teams will battle it out at the season-ending event, held at the O2 arena for the third straight year. Roger Federer won his record-tying fifth crown last year, defeating then World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the final.
