Rafael Nadal avenged last year's Bangkok loss to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-3 second-round win at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Twelve months ago, Nadal converted only two of his 26 break point opportunities in a three-set loss to Garcia-Lopez at the PTT Thailand Open.

"[It] was tough [to] lose last year in Bangkok," admitted Nadal. "Less painful because I came after winning the US Open, but probably was the more unbelievable loss in my career against him, because I never had as many chances as I had in that match, and I lost. [It] was a little bit on my mind today in the break points. I didn't play my best match [today], but is unbelievable the conditions how can change from Tokyo to here."

Nadal, who is seeking his first hard-court title of the year and his 20th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy, was broken once in the fourth game of the second set but still managed to win 33 of his 44 service points for victory in one hour and 46 minutes at the Qi Zhong Stadium. The 2009 Shanghai runner-up has a 66-12 match record on the season and will next play German No. 15 seed Florian Mayer.

Defending champion Andy Murray received a walkover into the third round when Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov was forced to withdraw prior to their match with a right thigh injury.

The second-seed Scot is bidding for a hat-trick of titles in Asia after lifting trophies at the PTT Thailand Open (d. Young) in Bangkok and the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships (d. Nadal) in Tokyo. Murray will now face Swiss No. 13 seed Stanislas Wawrinka, who visited the Shanghai United Hospital today.
