France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the top seed at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, visited the Spanish Riding School at Vienna's Imperial Hofburg Palace on Friday morning. Tsonga attended the morning practice as well as visiting some of the 74 Lipizzan stallions in the stables.
"It was something really special to see all the horses," said Tsonga. "It was a very nice visit for me, beautiful and relaxed. I was impressed.
"I like animals but I don't have the time for a pet at the moment, and especially not for a horse! But I love animals and hope I will have some after my career."
The Spanish Riding School is the world's oldest and only riding school that cultivates classical equitation. It is also the only institution in the world, which has practiced for over 430 years in the Renaissance tradition of the haute école. The Lipizzans are Europe's oldest breed of horses, with their origins dating back to the 16th century.
The objective of classical equitation is to study the way the horse naturally moves and to cultivate the highest levels of haute école elegance the horse is capable of through systematic training. The result creates an unparalleled harmony between rider and horse.
