Bryans Reach Valencia Semis; Mirnyi-Nestor Progress In Basel

World No. 1 duo Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan cruised into the semi-finals of the Valencia Open 500 on Friday as they defeated Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek 6-3, 6-4. The Americans broke serve once in each set and won 86 per cent of points behind their first serve to claim victory in 50 minutes.

The Bryans are coming off their seventh title of the season at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna (d. Mirnyi-Nestor) and improved to a 56-13 match record. They are looking to win the Valencia title for the first time after losing in the semi-finals on their only previous appearance in 2003, when it was a clay-court event.

At the Swiss Indoors Basel, second seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Robin Haase and Florian Mayer. The Belarusian-Canadian pairing, runners-up in Vienna last week, converted four of their 12 break point chances for victory in 67 minutes.

The 39-year-old Nestor is a three-time former champion in Basel, lifting the trophy in 2003 and 2006 with Mark Knowles and again in 2009 with Nenad Zimonjic. He and Zimonjic also finished runners-up last year (l. to Bryans).

In the semi-finals, Mirnyi and Nestor will face Belgian duo Xavier Malisse and Dick Norman, who defeated British tandem Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 in 79 minutes.
