Andujar Snaps Losing Run

Valencia, Spain

Spain’s Pablo Andujar advanced to the second round of the Valencia Open 500 on Sunday with a 6-0, 7-6(7) victory over Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela. It was the only main draw match to be played on the opening day of the ATP World Tour 500 indoor hard-court tennis tournament.

The No. 46-ranked Andujar snapped a five-match losing streak by converting four of his five break point chances and winning 75 per cent of points on serve. The 25 year old reached his fourth career ATP World Tour final last month at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest (l. to Mayer), but since then had suffered four first-round defeats.

In action on Monday in Valencia, fifth seed Gilles Simon opens his campaign against Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko. The Frenchman is looking to bounce back in the battle to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after suffering a first-round loss at the St. Petersburg Open last week (l. to Mannarino).
