Top seed and defending champion David Ferrer advanced to the Valencia Open 500 quarter-finals on Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil.

The Spaniard is looking to lift his third trophy at the ATP World Tour 500 indoor tennis tournament, following successes in 2008 (d. Almagro) and last year (d. Granollers). With his 53rd match win of the season, the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals qualifier goes onto meet Russian Nikolay Davydenko, who advanced without hitting a ball when French qualifier Nicolas Mahut pulled out due to personal reasons.

Sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro continued his quest for a spot at the prestigious season finale in London, from 20-27 November, by defeating Russia's Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-1. The 23-year-old del Potro, who hit 10 aces and dropped 13 points on serve for victory in 76 minutes, finished runner-up to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Sunday in the Erste Bank Open final in Vienna. He goes onto meet South African Kevin Anderson in the second round.

Frenchman Gael Monfils, the No. 3 seed, extended his winning streak to six straight matches by closing out a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Spaniard Pablo Andujar in second-round action. The recent Stockholm titlist is currently No. 14 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Year-To-Date Rankings.

Croatia's Marin Cilic, who lifted the St. Petersburg Open title on Sunday in his fourth ATP World Tour final of the season, beat Milos Raonic of Canada 6-4, 6-4 in just over 90 minutes. He improves to a 44-20 season mark.

Alex Bogomolov Jr., a semi-finalist last week in St. Petersburg, knocked out eighth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) in two hours and 18 minutes. The 28-year-old Bogomolov, who has a 26-19 season record, attained a career-high South African Airways ATP Ranking of No. 33 on Monday.
