World No. 1 Novak Djokovic defeated Gael Monfils 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to set up a semi-final clash with Roger Federer at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship Thursday in Abu Dhabi.

Making his event debut, Djokovic was satisfied with his performance against the Frenchman at the exhibition. “I was working on some things throughout the match,” Djokovic said. “I was trying to find a good rhythm and I think I was playing really well for this stage. I am saying that as I am not yet 100 percent ready to perform at this level.”

Djokovic and Federer have not played since the Serbian saved two match points to knock off the 16-time major champion in a five-set thriller in the US Open semi-finals. “It is always a challenge to play Federer whether it is a tournament or exhibition,” stated Djokovic. “He will always make you play well.”

In the first match of the six-man tournament, David Ferrer overcame Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, advancing to play two-time defending champion Rafael Nadal with a 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 victory. “It will be difficult against Nadal,” said Ferrer. “The last time we met I lost to him and after that he was injured. I will have to improve all aspects of my game [in order] to beat him.”

Monfils and Tsonga will now travel to Doha, where they will begin their 2012 season campaigns at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open.
