Gerry Weber Open Charity Involvement

Halle, Germany

Graf© Gerry Weber OpenThe Gerry Weber Open makes a $200,000 donation to Steffi Graf's charity, Children for Tomorrow.

The Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, has a strong charity involvement having donated a total of €902,892 since the inception of the tournament in 1993. Institutions that benefit from its program include children's hospitals, Children's Cancer Clinic, special schools and facilities for disabled persons.

Since 1993 the Gerry Weber Open has donated to several charity programs. Mr Gerhard Weber (President GERRY WEBER International AG) and Ralf Weber (Tournament Director) donated €125,000 in 1995 for the construction of a hall for therapeutic riding and a workshop for disabled people in Gütersloh.

The ground breaking ceremony at the indoor arena was attended by American tennis player Jimmy Connors in 1995 and over the years, as the construction developed, it was supported by Andrei Medvedev, Thomas Muster and Nicolas Kiefer. During Connors' visit in 1995 a therapy horse was baptised 'Jimmy' and it is still helping people.

During the tournament week the Gerry Weber Open enables disadvantaged children from various social facilities such as a children's hospice, Children's Cancer Clinic, special schools and facilities for disabled people to attend the tournament.

The Children's Cancer Clinic Bodelschwinghschen foundation (Bielefeld) has three treatment rooms which are supported by German tennis players Michael Kohlmann, Alexander Waske and Mischa Zverev. According to Chief physician, Professor Dr. Johannes Otte, the modern therapy rooms add “considerably to the healing process of children suffering from cancer”, serving as “a bridge to the outside world for our little patients”.
