Top seed and former finalist Rafael Nadal dropped seven points on serve to beat qualifier Denis Gremelmayr 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open. "Today the conditions were difficult, but I think I played another solid match, doing a few things really well," assessed Nadal. "I hit good returns, aggressive ones, and good backhands. I think I played a complete match."

Playing with a slightly heavier racquet, Nadal won 33 of his 40 service points and saved the only break point he faced. The 2010 runner-up (l. to Davydenko) converted four of 15 break point opportunities for victory in 90 minutes. "I think I'm returning better, especially [compared to] the last part of the 2011 season," Nadal said. "So that's important, because the beginning of the points a lot of times are the key.

"I'm happy about how my return has worked the two days here and how a few things have worked well with the new weight of the racquet. I'm starting to have good feelings."

Third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will meet Albert Ramos in the quarter-finals after he beat Flavio Cipolla 7-6(8), 6-3 in one hour and 47 minutes.

Tsonga, currently No. 6 in the South African Airways 2012 ATP Rankings, converted four of 10 break point opportunities to set up a meeting with Ramos. "It was quite difficult, like yesterday, but I played better today," said Tsonga. "I moved better, and I was a bit more aggressive, so I'm happy."

Sixth seed Alex Bogomolov Jr. was forced to withdraw due to a right ankle injury ahead of his match against Ramos.
