Second seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner worked hard for their semi-final berth at the Brisbane International, edging Marcos Baghdatis and Andy Murray 3-6, 6-3, 15-13 on Thursday at the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament.

The Austrian-German pairing won three points more than their opponents to prevail in the closely-fought encounter after 75 minutes. They won their second Grand Slam title together last season, triumphing at the US Open (d. Fyrstenberg-Matkowski).

In the semi-finals they will face Polish-Slovakian duo Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Michal Mertinak, who beat Australians Greg Jones and Marinko Matosevic 6-2, 7-5. Third seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau, last year’s Wimbledon finalists, also advanced to the semi-finals, beating Paul Hanley of Australia and Great Britain’s Jamie Murray 7-5, 6-3 in 84 minutes.

At the Aircel Chennai Open, all three seeded teams in action progressed to the semi-finals. No. 1 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna defeated Andreas Beck and Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6(3) in one hour and 14 minutes. The Indian pair will take on fourth-seeded Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, who advanced Wednesday.

Second seeds Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram topped the Colombian duo of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 to set up a final four clash with Leander Paes and Janko Tipsarevic, the No. 3 seeds. Paes and Tipsarevic beat Fabio Fognini and Igor Zelenay 6-3, 6-4, winning 81 per cent of their first serve points in the one hour and four minute victory.

With no seeded teams remaining in Doha, Christopher Kas and Philipp Kohlschreiber, along with Filip Polasek and Lukas Rosol, booked their places in Friday’s Qatar ExxonMobil Open title match.

Kas and Kohlschreiber cruised past Flavio Cipolla and Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-2, breaking the Italians three times to lock up the semi-final win in just 54 minutes. Polasek and Rosol edged Dmitry Tursunov and Nenad Zimonjic 6-2, 3-6, 13-11 to advance.
