ATP WORLD TOUR 2012 - WEEK 1
Mirnyi-Nestor Beat Former Brisbane Finalists
by ATP Staff|
Top seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor beat third seeds and last year's finalists Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau 6-2, 7-6(3) in 83 minutes on Saturday for a place in the Brisbane International title match.
Mirnyi and Nestor dropped just nine service points and hit eight aces. They won 30 of 34 points on first serve against Lindstedt and Tecau, who lost to Lukas Dlouhy and Paul Hanley in last year's final, and are now 5-1 lifetime against the Swedish-Romanian duo.
Mirnyi and Nestor, who have won four titles together, will next challenge another team who competed at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in November, second seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner.
At the Aircel Chennai Open, former finalists Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram knocked out top seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 to reach the title match for the first time since 2004.
Both teams won 62 points in the match, but it was the fourth-seeded Israelis who edged the home favourites in the final set match tie-break to claim victory in one hour and 28 minutes.
Erlich and Ram are seeking their 15th team title, having last triumphed at the 2011 Winston-Salem Open (d. Kas-Peya). The former Australian Open champions also won the AEGON International last year (d. Dimitrov-Seppi).
Paes is looking to repeat as champion, having lifted the trophy last year with Bhupathi. Tipsarevic is aiming to pull off a Chennai double, as he'll square off against Milos Raonic in Sunday's singles final.
