Adrian Mannarino upset fifth-seeded Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Heineken Open Tuesday in Auckland.

The 23-year-old qualifier won 26 of his 29 first serve points and did not face a break point. He broke the South African three times to claim victory over the World No. 32 in one hour and four minutes.

The Frenchman’s best result in 2011 came in Johannesburg, where he reached the semi-finals before falling to eventual champion Anderson in the pair’s previous FedEx ATP Head 2 Head encounter.

The left-handed Mannarino, who advanced to the quarter-finals in Auckland last year (l. to Almagro), will next play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who rallied to beat Igor Kunitsyn 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and four minutes. In a match that saw 11 breaks of serve, Garcia-Lopez broke six times to even his record against the Russian to a 1-1 mark.

No. 8 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber was tested in his opener, topping Swiss qualifier Stephane Bohli 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The 2008 champion hit 13 aces and won 76 per cent of his first serve points to advance in one hour and 52 minutes.

Kohlschreiber is looking to win his fourth title, with his most recent triumph coming at last year's Gerry Weber Open in Halle (d. Petzschner). A quarter-finalist in 2011, the German will square off against Ryan Harrison in the second round.

Harrison won an all-American wild card clash, beating Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 10 minutes. The 19-year-old Harrison won 50 per cent of his second serve return points to break his countryman three times in their first meeting.

Lukas Rosol, Olivier Rochus and Carlos Berlocq were also victorious in first-round action.
