Bryans Open 2012 Season With Sydney Win

Doubles 2012

Top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan won their 2012 season debut on Wednesday, defeating Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer 7-5, 6-4 at the Apia International Sydney.

Though the Bryans were broken three times by one of the top new doubles pairings, they converted five of their own service breaks against Qureshi and Rojer to win the first-round encounter in one hour and 22 minutes. "It feels good to get our first victory of the new year especially against the very tough new team of Rojer and Qureshi," Mike Bryan told ATPWorldTour.com.

"It was a hard-fought match and we are proud of our effort coming back from a couple breaks down in the first set. We'll probably play those guys a bunch in 2012 but today was a great test to see where we're at as we prepare for the first Grand Slam of the year."

The American twins are seeking their second title in Sydney, having lifted the trophy in 2009. They finished runner-up to Lukas Dlouhy and Paul Hanley last year, and also appeared in the final in 2008 and 2004.

Xavier Malisse and Dick Norman reached the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Michael Kohlmann and Philipp Petzschner. Malisse and Norman won 74 per cent of their service points to beat the German pair in just under an hour.

At the Heineken Open in Auckland, fourth seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas defeated Paul Hanley and Jamie Murray 6-7(5), 6-1, 10-5. Gonzalez and Kas did not drop serve in their one hour and 20 minute first-round win.
