Five-time Australian Open titlists and reigning champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan beat 2008 winners Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram on Thursday in a 7-6(6), 6-4 victory over 84 minutes.

The Bryans, who are 48-7 at Melbourne Park, hit 28 winners and converted two of five break point opportunities. Erlich and Ram, victors over Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra in the 2008 final, won just seven of 20 points on their second serves.

The American twins are looking to lift their 12th major championship trophy and take sole ownership of the record for most titles, which they currently share with Australians Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde.

Last year's semi-finalists Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, the second seeds, powered their way past Australians Benjamin Mitchell and Matt Reid 6-2, 6-2 in 49 minutes, dropping just nine point on their serves.

Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic, the third seeds, who advanced to the quarter-finals last year, converted two of 12 break point chances for a 7-6(6), 6-3 victory over Jordan Kerr and Donald Young. They go onto face Spaniards Marc Lopez and David Marrero.

Two-time Grand Slam champions and No. 5 seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner defeated Spaniards Nicolas Almagro and Pere Riba 6-4, 6-4 in 61 minutes.

Victor Hanescu and Olivier Rochus scraped past ninth seeds Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-5, while 10th seeds Eric Butorac and Bruno Soares earned a 7-6(5), 7-6(9) win over Frederico Gil and Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
