Second seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor defeated No. 12 seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-2 on Wednesday to move within one win of reaching the Australian Open final.

The 39-year-old Nestor, who won the Australian Open doubles title in 2002 with Mark Knowles, will be looking for his fifth final appearance in Melbourne. Mirnyi, 34, is also looking for a return trip to the championship match after his runner-up finish in 2007 (w/Bjorkman).

Despite not facing a single break point on serve, Mirnyi and Nestor dropped a set for the first time this fortnight when they were edged out by the Mexican-German duo in the second set tie-break. They came back with two breaks of serve in the decisive set to clinch the one hour, 41-minute victory.

The Belarusian-Canadian duo also reached the semi-finals last year in Melbourne, falling to Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

They will once again face three-time runner-up Paes for a place in the final, after the 38 year old teamed with Czech Radek Stepanek for their third straight win over a seeded duo. They knocked out 10th seeds Eric Butorac and Bruno Soares 6-4, 7-6(4) to remain the only tandem yet to lose a set in the men's draw.

Paes and Stepanek, who are playing in their fourth tournament together, won the Delray Beach title on their partnership debut in 2004.
