Roddick, Monfils Lead 2012 SAP Open Field

The SAP Open, the premier men’s professional tennis tournament in Northern California, announced Friday the singles players on the tournament's Direct Acceptance List.

Included in the singles 28-draw are two players formerly ranked No. 1 in the world – American Andy Roddick and Australian Lleyton Hewitt, each of whom are former SAP Open champions. The field features players representing 13 countries: United States, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Australia, Israel, Colombia, Luxembourg, Belgium, South Africa, Bulgaria, Canada and Uzbekistan. Canada’s Milos Raonic returns to San Jose to defend his first ATP World Tour singles title.

Fourteen-time SAP Open champion and seven-time Grand Slam titlist John McEnroe will highlight the first day of competition Monday when he teams up with Raonic for a doubles exhibition against France’s Gael Monfils and James Blake of the United States at 7 p.m. Blake is scheduled to play his first singles match on Tuesday night at 7 p.m., followed by American Sam Querrey’s initial appearance. Wednesday will provide a blockbuster evening of tennis with Roddick and Raonic each playing his first match of the tournament. Opponents for each of the featured tournament matches will be determined at the SAP Open draw event to be hosted Friday, February 10 at Noon at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose.

“We are extremely pleased with this strong, international group of players who have entered the 2012 SAP Open,” Tournament Director Bill Rapp said.  “With a deep field made up of crafty veterans, aggressive young guns and six current or former top-10 players, we expect the 2012 tournament to be one of the most competitive and entertaining in recent history.”
