Monfils© Open Sud de FranceGael Monfils faces Jarkko Nieminen in the Montpellier quarter-finals.

MONTPELLIER FRIDAY PREVIEW – SIX OF TOP EIGHT SEEDS, FIVE FRENCHMEN, HIGHLIGHT QUARTER-FINALS
• The quarter-finals of the Open Sud de France feature an outstanding line-up with six of the top eight seeds and five Frenchmen.

• In the opening singles match on Court Central, French wild card Guillaume Rufin takes on countryman and No. 2 seed Gilles Simon for the first time. Rufin opened on Monday with a 64 76 victory over Vasek Pospisil and followed with his first Top 20 win over No. 15 Feliciano Lopez on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Rufin is appearing in his second career ATP World Tour quarter-final (2010 Marseille). Simon is looking to reach his second semi-final of the season. He opened the campaign with a semi-final in Brisbane (l. to Dolgopolov) and followed with a second round at the Australian Open.

• Second on is top seed Tomas Berdych against Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, who is looking for his first win (0-2) against the top player from the Czech Republic. Berdych dropped only two games in his opening match Thursday vs. Florent Serra and he was in top form in Australia, making it to his fifth career Grand Slam quarter-final (falling to Nadal in a tight four-setter). Mahut is coming off his equal-best Grand Slam performance, a third round finish at the Australian Open (he went that far at Wimbledon in 2006). This is Mahut’s first ATP World Tour quarter-final since Metz last September and he’s trying to reach his first semi-final since Metz in 2007. He is 3-21 lifetime vs. Top 10 opponents and his last win came over No. 2 Nadal in the quarter-finals at the Queen’s Club in London in June 2007.

• Next up is No. 8 seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland against No. 3 Gael Monfils, who is the No. 3 Frenchman. Nieminen has had a solid 2012 start, winning his second ATP World Tour title in Sydney (as a qualifier) and he comes in with an 8-2 match record . Monfils is 7-2 on the season, opening the season by defeating Nadal in the semi-finals in Doha en route to the final (l. to Tsonga). He then lost in the third round at the Australian Open in a dramatic five-setter to No. 92-ranked Mikhail Kukushkin. He has done well at this event before - he was a finalist in 2005 when it was held in Lyon, and the champion in 2010 when it was held here. Monfils won the two previous meetings last season, both indoors in Bangkok (QF) and Stockholm (F).

• In the final match, No. 4 Richard Gasquet takes a 2-0 career mark against No. 7 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany. Gasquet was a quarter-finalist in Sydney and reached the fourth round at the Australian Open last month. His last semi-final came in Rome last May. Kohlschreiber is off to an   8-3 mark this season and he’s trying to reach his second semi-final (Auckland, l. to Rochus). He also advanced to the fourth round at the Australian Open (l. to del Potro).

ZAGREB FRIDAY PREVIEW - FORMER CHAMPIONS DODIG & BAGHDATIS TO CLASH IN QUARTER-FINALS
• A clash between two former PBZ Zagreb Indoors champions highlights quarter-final Friday at the ATP World Tour 250 event, with five of the eight seeds still alive in the draw.

• First up is No. 7 seed Robin Haase of the Netherlands against Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko. Haase has won back-to-back matches for the first time since last August - he lost first or second round at eight events in a row coming into Zagreb. Now he will take on Lacko, who is coming off a third round showing at the Australian Open (taking out Top 50 players Ivan Ljubicic and Donald Young along the way) and who has already beaten a seed this week: No. 2 seed Alex Bogomolov Jr. This is a first-time ATP World Tour meeting, but Lacko won their only other meeting at a Challenger in 2007.

• Second on is No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny against No. 8 seed Ivo Karlovic. Youzhny is a former Top 10 player now at No. 39, Karlovic is a former Top 15 player now at No. 46 - but they have both performed very well this week, not losing a set en route to this quarter-final match. But Youzhny has always had the upper hand in the pair’s head-to-head, winning both previous meetings, in straight sets at the Australian Open in 2008 and in a three-setter at Doha earlier this year (surviving 20 aces).

• Next is No. 4 seed Ivan Dodig against No. 6 seed Marcos Baghdatis, a clash between former PBZ Zagreb Indoors champions. They’re both on seven-match winning streaks here - Baghdatis is actually 7-0 here (5-0 to win the title in 2007 and 2-0 so far this year) while Dodig is 10-2 here (he was 3-2 in his first two appearances, then 5-0 to win the title in 2011 and 2-0 so far this year). They’ve both dropped opening sets this week, Baghdatis in the first round and Dodig in the second round. Dodig won their only previous meeting and will likely also have Croatian home crowd support.

• On Court 1, Germany’s Michael Berrer takes on Austria’s Jurgen Melzer. Berrer may be ranked No. 105 but he always seems to lift his game on these courts - he has reached his only two ATP World Tour finals right here the last two years, and this year he beat top seed Ivan Ljubicic en route to the quarter-finals. Melzer, ranked as high as No. 8 last spring, has slipped to No. 41 this week but also seems to have lifted his game, not losing a set in three qualifying and two main draw matches this week (in fact he has only lost 16 games in eight sets). Perhaps surprisingly, the 31-year-old Berrer and the 30-year-old Melzer are playing on the ATP World Tour for the first time.

VINA DEL MAR FRIDAY PREVIEW – TOP SEEDS LEAD WAY, FOUR ARGENTINES IN QUARTER-FINALS
• It’s down to eight players at the VTR Open in Vina del Mar, the first clay court tournament of the ATP World Tour season. And the Top 2 seeds are still alive and hoping to reach the final four. The remaining field have combined to win 28 of 30 sets.

• The first two matches of the day feature experience-against-youth clashes, beginning with No. 7 seed Carlos Berlocq taking on fellow Argentine Federico Delbonis, who qualified into the main draw. Another common theme in these matches is both veterans are hoping for third time lucky in the quarter-finals here. Berlocq, who turns 29 today, lost in this round twice before (in 2007-08). The 21-year-old Delbonis defeated local wild card Nicolas Massu and No. 3 seed/2010 champ Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets and he’s appearing in his second career ATP World Tour quarter-final (or better). Last July, he qualified and advanced to his first ATP semi-final in Stuttgart (l. to Ferrero).

• In the second match, No. 2 seed Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina meets  Brazil’s Joao Souza for the first time in an ATP World Tour tournament. They met in a Challenger three years ago in a Colombian final and Chela prevailed in three sets. The 32-year-old Chela is appearing in his third quarter-final on Chilean soil (2009, ’11). The 23-year-old Souza is attempting to reach his third career ATP World Tour semi-final. Last season he was a semi-finalist in Kitzbuehel and quarter-finalist in Bucharest. Two years ago here he broke through as a qualifier ranked No. 208 and reached the semis (l. to Monaco). He is ranked No. 108 this week after reaching a career-high No. 84 on Sept. 19, 2011.

• The third match is France’s Jeremy Chardy against Portugal’s Federico Gil, an all-unseeded clash. Gil may have had the more impressive list of wins, having upset No. 4 seed Pablo Andujar handily in the second round, 62 61, but Chardy owns their head-to-head, 3-1 (although Gil’s win did come in their most recent meeting in 2011, while Chardy’s wins all came in 2008).

• Last up is top seed Juan Monaco against No. 5 seed Albert Montanes.  Neither player won a match in January but have been impressive on the clay this week, Monaco beating Igor Andreev 62 61 in the second round after a first round bye and Montanes winning both his first two matches in straight sets. Monaco, a former World No. 14, and Montanes, a former World No. 22, have met twice before, with Montanes winning both meetings in straight sets (including a 64 62 win right here six years ago). Monaco is a two-time finalists here; Montanes is a two-time semi-finalist.
