MONTPELLIER PREVIEW – BERDYCH, FRENCH TRIO, AMONG SIX TOP 25 ENTRIES
The Open Sud de France, one of two indoor hard court tournaments this week kicking off the ATP World Tour European circuit, features an outstanding field with six of the Top 25 players in the South African Airways ATP Rankings. The tournament was held two years ago in October in Montpellier, one of the fastest-growing cities in France over the past 25 years, and was not held last year due to moving to late January on the calendar.
The tournament, which relocated from Lyon (1987-2009) to the multi-purpose venue called the ARENA, has a total capacity of 14,000 and seating for 7,500 for tennis.
There are nine Frenchmen in the main draw (not including qualifiers). The top seed is World No. 7 Tomas Berdych, who reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open for the second straight year.
The Czech Republic native is joined by the French trio of No. 2 seed Gilles Simon, No. 3 Gael Monfils, who won the title here two years ago, and No. 4 Richard Gasquet. They all have 1R byes.
The other seeds are: No. 5 Feliciano Lopez of Spain, No. 6 Florian Mayer of Germany, No. 7 Philipp Kohlschreiber and No. 8 Jarkko Nieminen of Finland.
On Monday’s opening schedule, there are four final round qualifying matches, all involving Frenchmen, and three main draw singles matches. The first match on Court Central features 21-year-olds Guillaume Rufin, a French wild card entry, and No. 2 Canadian, Vasek Pospisil in a first-time ATP World Tour meeting. In 2009, Rufin won 63 61 in the 1R of a Polish Challenger. In the next match, former World No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko, a wild card, looks for his second win against Frenchman Stephane Robert. On Court 1, No. 6 seed Florian Mayer meets Gilles Muller for the first time.

ZAGREB PREVIEW – FOUR FORMER CHAMPS IN DRAW, LED BY CROATS LJUBICIC, DODIG
The PBZ Zagreb Indoors, one of two European indoor tournaments on the ATP World Tour taking place this week, are led by top seed and 2006 champion Ivan Ljubicic, who also was runner-up in 2007-08.
Other seeds in the field are: No.2 Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia, No. 3 Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, No. 4 and reigning champion Ivan Dodig of Croatia, No. 5 Andreas Seppi of Italy, No. 6 and 2007 winner Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, No. 7 Robin Haase of the Netherlands and No. 8 Ivo Karlovic of Croatia. All eight seeds have reached the quarter-finals or better in the past in Zagreb. While there are three seeded Croats, the three wild cards are also Croats.
One year ago Dodig broke through to become the first of 10 first-time winners on the ATP World Tour during the season. He joined countrymen Marin Cilic (2009-10) and Ljubicic (2006) as native winners.
On Monday’s schedule, there are four final round qualifying and five first round main draw matches. Leading off Centre Court play is Italian Potito Starace against top Slovakian Lukas Lacko, who is coming off a third round showing at the Australian Open (l. to Nadal). In the next match, top seed and local favorite Ljubicic, takes a 2-1 career mark against No. 2 Slovakian Karol Beck. Ljubicic has a 16-5 career mark in Zagreb and he split the two previous indoor meetings against Beck. In the final match, No. 7 Haase meets Croat wild card Kristijan Mesaros, who is making his ATP World Tour debut.
