Leonardo Mayer knocked off sixth seed Santiago Giraldo 7-6(5), 6-1 to begin his campaign at the VTR Open in Viña del Mar Monday.
After winning the first set tie-break, Mayer dominated the second set, breaking the Colombian twice, while winning 80 per cent of his service points to defeat the 2011 runner-up in one hour and 31 minutes.
Joao Souza upset No. 8 seed Filippo Volandri, battling past the Italian 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(5). The Brazilian converted just two of his 11 break point opportunities, and won two fewer points than Volandri, but served out the match in a tight final set tie-break to win the lengthy contest in two hours and 53 minutes.
With the victory, Souza avenged his loss to Volandri in the Bucharest quarter-finals last year.
Former World No. 18 Igor Andreev rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Chilean wild card Paul Capdeville in the night match Monday. He converted on his sixth break point opportunity of the decisive set to clinch the victory in two hours and two minutes.
Andreev, currently ranked No. 126, will next confront top seed and two-time finalist Juan Monaco of Argentina.
Rogerio Dutra Silva, Diego Junqueira, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo and Federico Delbonis qualified into the main draw.
