Monaco improved to a 5-2 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against the Russian as he capitalised on six of his 12 break points. Andreev, a former World No. 18, managed to win just 14 points on serve.
“It’s always great to come back to a place where you feel so comfortable,” he said. “It was my first clay match of the year and sometimes you’re not sure about how you’ll play, so I’m very happy about the level I had.”
After converting a second break of serve late in the first set, Montanes pulled away from the qualifier, winning 80 per cent of his service points, and breaking the Brazilian twice in the second set to seal the win in one hour and 34 minutes.
Montanes, bidding to win his first title since triumphing in Stuttgart two years ago, is looking to advance to his third semi-final at the ATP World Tour 250 event.
Frederico Gil ousted fourth seed Pablo Andujar 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. The 99th-ranked Gil dominated with his return game, breaking the Spaniard six times and winning 66 per cent of his return points to clinch the upset in 57 minutes.
