Bogomolov, Youzhny Start Zagreb Title Bid; Melzer Tops Petzschner

Second seed Alex Bogomolov Jr., the ATP Most Improved Player of the Year award recipient for 2011, began his quest for a first ATP World Tour title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Croatian wild card Dino Marcan on Tuesday in 63 minutes at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors.

Bogomolov converted four of his five break point opportunities and hit four aces. Marcan, 20, was making his ATP World Tour debut.

Bogomolov's Russian compatriot, third seed Mikhail Youzhny, knocked out 2008 champion Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine 6-4, 7-6(4) in one hour and 49 minutes. It was their fourth meeting (Youzhny leads 3-1). Youzhny served for the match at 5-4, but was broken before he won the 139th tie-break of his career (139-128) according to the FedEx ATP Reliability Index.

Sixth seed Marcos Baghdatis rallied to defeat Lukas Rosol 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 52 minutes. The 2007 champion converted both of his break point opportunities in the third set to advance past the Czech.

No. 8 seed Ivo Karlovic reached the second round with a 7-6(2), 6-3 victory over Blaz Kavcic. Karlovic won 85 per cent of his first serve points, and broke the Slovenian twice in the second set to seal the win in one hour and 23 minutes.

Two-time runner-up Michael Berrer saved five of six break points to beat Swiss qualifier Marco Chiudinelli 7-6(3), 6-1 in 72 minutes. Elsewhere, Lukasz Kubot stormed past Italian qualifier Mateo Viola 6-2, 6-1 in just over one hour.

Top Austrian Jurgen Melzer, who qualified into the main draw for the first time since Metz in September 2007, won his first match in four meeting against his doubles partner Philipp Petzschner of Germany 6-1, 6-3 in just 51 minutes. Melzer dropped 10 points on serve and hit six aces.
