Fifth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet started his second Rotterdam campaign with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Flavio Cipolla of Italy on Monday at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament.

Gasquet, 25, is now 6-3 on the 2012 season, which includes quarter-final exits at the Apia International Sydney (l. to Istomin) and the Open Sud de France in Montpellier (l. to Kohlschreiber).

Gasquet's compatriot Paul-Henri Mathieu, a 30-year-old qualifier, beat fourth seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in a big-serving encounter over two hours and 51 minutes. Mathieu hit 10 aces and saved eight of nine break points, while Lopez struck 13 aces and won 72 per cent of his service points.

"I almost cannot believe it," said Mathieu. "I panicked a bit at the beginning of the match, he played very well. I'm moving better now and started playing better during the important points. I'm happy to win three matches in a row in three days during my first month back in competition."

In a contest between two players making their debut in Rotterdam, Poland’s Lukasz Kubot ousted sixth-seeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2. The No. 58-ranked Kubot notched his third tour-level win of the season in two hours and 22 minutes as he broke serve five times from 12 opportunities.

The 23-year-old Dolgopolov slipped to a 6-3 match record on the season. He opened by reaching the final of the Brisbane International (l. to Murray), before suffering a third-round exit at the Australian Open at the hands of Bernard Tomic.

Dutch wild card Jesse Huta Galung knocked out 2005 and 2007 finalist Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia 7-6(6), 6-3 in one hour and 47 minutes. Both players hit 11 aces, but Ljubicic could only convert one of his six break point opportunities.

The ATP World Tour 500 indoor hard-court tournament was first contested in 1974.
