Saturday Briefing - Rotterdam, Sao Paulo, San Jose

Federer© Henk KosterRoger Federer faces Nikolay Davydenko in the semi-finals.

ROTTERDAM SATURDAY PREVIEW - FEDERER HEADLINES ALL-STAR FINAL FOUR IN ROTTERDAM
• Three current Top 10 players and a former World No. 3 make up the final four at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, the first ATP World Tour 500 tournament of the 2012 season.
• Two Top 10 players will collide in the first semi-final, as Tomas Berdych faces Juan Martin del Potro; the No. 7-ranked, No. 2-seeded Berdych is in his second semi-final of the year (he won the Montpellier title three weeks ago) while the No. 10-ranked, No. 3-seeded del Potro is in his first semi-final of the season.
• Although del Potro has beaten Berdych the last two times they have played, they haven’t played since del Potro’s wrist injury-marred 2010 season; and since the start of 2011, Berdych has fared much better against Top 10 players (Berdych is 7-10 against Top 10 players since the start of 2011, del Potro is 3-10).
• The second semi-final sees two of the ATP World’s most accomplished veterans squaring off, as top seed Roger Federer takes on unseeded Nikolay Davydenko; The Russian took out No. 5 seed Richard Gasquet to get here but will have to defy a 2-16 head-to-head record against Federer to go any further (and the last time they played, in Doha last month, Federer needed just 54 minutes for a 62 62 victory).
• Federer hasn’t lost to anyone aged 30 or over in almost 10 years, not a good omen for the 30-year-old Davydenko (the last 30-something to do it was a 31-year-old Andre Agassi in the Miami final in 2002).
