Montanes Crashes Out In Sao Paulo

Seventh seed Albert Montanes crashed out in the Brasil Open first round on Monday.

The 31-year-old Spaniard lost to Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-2, 6-3 in 65 minutes. It was their sixth clay-court meeting (Volandri leads 4-2) and Volandri's first tour-level victory of the season (1-4).

World No. 184 and wild card Javier Marti converted four of 11 break point opportunities to beat Frederico Gil of Portugal, a semi-finalist in 2009, 6-2, 6-4 in 86 minutes.

Ricardo Mello set an all-Brazilian second-round clash with fourth seed Thomaz Bellucci after beating Spain’s Pere Riba 6-4, 6-2. The 31 year old, a former Top 50 player, dropped just 12 points on serve and converted three of his four break point chances to claim victory in 73 minutes. He has reached the semi-finals at this tournament three times, including last year when he lost to Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Earlier in the day, Jeremy Chardy, Paul Capdeville, Igor Andreev and Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo qualified for the main draw.
