Bhupathi-Bopanna Edge Into Marseille QFs

Top-seeded Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna avoided their second first-round exit in as many weeks Tuesday, when the beat James Cerretani and Adil Shamasdin 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 in 78 minutes at the Open 13.

Bhupathi and Bopanna won 77 per cent of their service points, hit seven aces and saved four of five break points. Their best result so far this season came at the Aircel Chennai Open, when they lost to Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram in the semi-finals.

Third seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Igor Zelenay saved all six break points they faced and lost 12 points on their serves to beat Italians Flavio Cipolla and Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-3 in just 57 minutes.

At the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, Julien Benneteau and Olivier Rochus upset No. 2 seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner 6-1, 3-6, 10-5 in Memphis. Benneteau and Rochus won 13 more points than the reigning US Open champions to advance in just over an hour.

Third seeds Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek beat Xavier Malisse and Treat Conrad Huey 7-5, 6-4, saving eight of the nine break points against their serves.

Alex Bogomolov Jr. and Lukasz Kubot also reached the quarter-finals, topping Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 6-2, 4-6, 15-13.

In Buenos Aires, No. 3 seeds Pablo Andujar and Carlos Berlocq defeated Benoit Paire and Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 0-6, 10-7 to advance to the final eight at the Copa Claro.

Rui Machado and Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo rallied to edge alternates Nikola Ciric and Marcel Felder 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 in 80 minutes.
